Description:

A Gimp brush to paint gently falling snowflakes.

This is a Gimp image hose brush (a .gih file) containing 27 images. The snowflakes were created in Inkscape, then imported into Gimp for further processing.

Download the .zip file, unzip it, then place the steves-snowflakes.gih brush file into the "brushes" directory of your own gimp directory (.gimp-2.x/brushes/ in Linux) or in the system gimp directory (in Linux, often /usr/share/gimp/2.x/brushes/).

This animated Gimp brush can be used with any color (not just white). Try using the colors from a gradient. After selecting the paintbrush tool, click the "Use color from gradient" checkbox, then click the gradient preview and choose a gradient from the drop-down list.

Try creating several layers filled with transparency, and then change the scale and opacity of the Steve's Snowflakes brush for each layer, with smaller and less opaque snowflakes in the background and larger, more opaque snowflakes in the foreground.

Please ignore the "No icon in brush chooser" comments below. They are no longer valid. As of version 3 (Dec. 16, 2008) Steve's Snowflakes has an easy-to-see black-on-white snowflake icon in the brush chooser.

This brush is white with transparency, so the brush preview icon in the brush selection areas of the Gimp will probably look solid white and may therefore be difficult to determine. But when selected, Gimp will display the name of the brush, "Steve's Snowflakes v2"

Best wishes,
Steve

I'm sorry, the name of the brush in Gimp will be "Steve's Snowflakes"

The icon preview in the brush selection palette will be solid white, so one may need to refer to the name rather than the icon/preview when selecting the brush.

Forget about this "no icon in brush chooser" issue. Now Steve's Snowflakes (as of version 3, December 16, 2008) has a black preview icon in the brushes palette. :-) In addition, one can paint in any color now (instead of just white).
